Quake, the game that made shooters better and was soon forgotten is getting an eventual sequel clinging to the classic and still played Quake Arena. I am a long time fan of the game and I played it since I was about 12. I clocked in about over 1000 hours in the game... Don't judge. Anyways, the sequel looked good, I couldn't wait to play it and as soon I heard it was going to be free-to-play and I was excited to see the game! I didn't have to pay for the game, so that must mean a great time with a slight of microtransactions. What makes this so fun is that Microtransactions are all the game is. Hello and welcome to this thought blog.
"But, StarterPack, that's what you should expect from a free game, you shouldn't have had your hopes up!" Well, I also play a game called Team Fortress 2, a game that was free since 2011 and still holds up as one of the best games I played. There is a hint of Microtransactions, but those pixels you buy are just cosmetics, does nothing to improve your play or to make the experience better, they just make you look good in combat. "StarterPack, what if the microtransactions are just another way of making yourself look good?" Well, it's not. You see, the characters are all locked, but one: Anarki, the hoverboard guy from the last game. "That doesn't sound bad!" Would you like to play as a character that has only 75 health?
I hate how the starter character is a weak loadout. He might be fast, but you can still be railed down by the experience players out there. I would have understand if they had three characters instead of one, but they just want to leach your wallet. "But, StarterPack, the devs need the money to gain their earnings. You are just hating on the fact that the devs want what they deserve!" No, I respect devs for what they do, they put their sweat and blood to what they create and sometimes they have to take their own time to work even harder for their project. That's why I respect Bethesda, the company working on this game, but do you know why people hate companies like Activision or EA? Because they leach their consumer's wallet. They charge the price of the game for a season pass and get only one thing out of it. I do not respect a dev that just wants more money out of what they made.
"What if it's a reasonable price, StarterPack? They might not be as expensive as you think!" Well, it's a free game that almost every fan of the game is going to get, they are going to try and get their money's worth. "Well, you can spend 10 bucks on a character StarterPack!" Yeah, I don't like that! That's not how you release a game! You can't restrict a player from a promised experience and make them pay for it. It's as if Valve released TF2 and made you only play as the Scout. That would not be cool since he has low health and the most broken weapons on the universe. "Well, that's not what happened!"
Okay, let me put in terms for you to understand. Imagine Square made the next Final Fantasy and it's free. You are promised experience where you can battle awesome enemies with new team managing mechanics, but when you play it, you are restricted with only 2 team slots and 2 characters. In order for you to buy the full team roster and slots, you have to buy each slot individually with the payment of 10 bucks each. And to get every character to fill those slots, you have to buy each character individually for the price of an extra 10 bucks. Would you say they deserved the money or would say this is a rip-off? That's how I feel about Quake Champions.
"Well, that's not as bad as Quake Champions. Plus, if you don't want to buy them with real money, just pay with in-game currency." Yeah, I would either have to play the game for an extended amount of time to get the in-game currency or buy it like almost every free game out there. "Well, I bet it's not that bad." Well, it's of course going to be 5 bucks to buy just a small amount, but you play the other characters temporarily. Temporarily. I bet that's going to be the cheapest thing to buy instead of trying to get the characters with or without the in-game currency.
"Well, the characters only difference is only going to be the health." They have abilities. Each one has an ability and the one that the starting character is a health recharge. Sounds great for a weak character, but when you look at it, you only have 75 health. I mean, you can say there is the armor, but he only starts with 25 armor, meaning he has a total of 100 hit points, but that doesn't make much of a difference on how he will handle in the game. "Well, I guess you just have to get good!" Don't pull that 7th grade garbage on me, you probably Waifu dweeb.
Each character has someone that towers over them, the tank is taken out by the assassin and all. I like that it would feel balanced, but seeing that this Hoverboard, wanna-be-coolguy has so many people towering over him just feel unfair. It's like a Dwarf in a room full of Elves. The one character that seems to be the most challenging and the most difficult to use is the Brute, Scalebearer. He can ram into people, killing them instantly and has the most health and armor out of the roster. If rocket jumped, you can land on enemies, killing them instantly. Sounds overpowered in many ways, but the way that the rockets feel, he can be pushed back while in the air. Playing as the starter character while facing this guy seem a bit unfair to me. It's like trying to see if a mouse can take on a rat.
"Well, with the differences aside, what about the game itself?" I would have to say the game looks very fun. I've seen gameplay and it's just seem so fun. The weapon placements look so fun to tackle and the map design is just perfect. I'm just ashamed to see that this game is becoming a wallet leach. I know that many of you might say, "I'm going to be a F2P!" but in reality, you're going to be tempted to buy the characters because you saw this one dude pull off a major stunt with this one character. I know that sounds like I'm a priest trying to not make you do drugs, but I just hate how they are making this game a P2W (Pay-to-Win) kind of game. I know that it seems like I should expect this, but from a trust worthy company such as Bethesda seem very tragic. "Trustworthy? Lol XD u scrub!" I know, typical of me to say, but I actually like this company. It's just sad that they have become this.
Well, I'm done talking about this. I know that I said I would return in a month, but I just had to write this done. I need to share my thoughts on this. I am not entirely back, know that. This is just quick write, I thought would be fun. Anyways, now I'm going to take a full break. I hope you enjoyed this and 'til next time...
